Gallery History

During art lessons, we always think that the construction of artistic knowledge is reinforced by direct contact with the work of art. The way to broaden this contact and socialize it would be to bring art into the school in an effective and consistent way – designating a space to exhibit the works of guest artists.

The seed for the creation of an art gallery had already been sown in the various activities carried out by the Comunitária since its foundation, but it was in 1996 that this idea was put into practice with the aim of broadening the students’ direct contact with art and at the same time offering this possibility to the institution’s internal and external public. Initially called the Art Gallery Space, the exhibition environment was shared with other school activities, mixing art exhibitions with educational ones, a fact that occurred during its first eleven years.

In 2007, as part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the Escola Comunitária, the venue became exclusively occupied by the Gallery, concentrating its activities on exhibitions with artists. In this way, the Art Gallery of the Escola Comunitária de Campinas has established itself as a cultural space, solidifying the relationship between the school and society.

With the celebration of the Comunitária’s 35th anniversary in 2012, a new change was added to the gallery’s name, and it was renamed the “Francisco Biojone” Art Gallery.

As one of the fathers who took part in the founding of the school and a great promoter of art teaching at the school, Francisco Biojone was an artist with a prolific artistic career, marked by challenge and innovation. Given his importance as an artist and his relationship with the Community, the invitation was made as a way of paying tribute to him.

With Biojone’s solo show “Abstract Relations”, held in early 2012, the gallery was reopened under its new name, emphasizing the importance of art and the artist to the school.Francisco Biojone was born in Campinas on December 28, 1934 and died in 2018 at the age of 83. He was one of the most important names on the art scene, taking part in the Vanguard Group along with Maria Helena Motta Paes, Geraldo de Souza, Geraldo M. JÜRGENSEN, Raul Porto, Bernardo Caro, Mário Bueno, Franco Sacchi, Thomaz Perina, Enéas Dedecca, Edoardo Belgrado. His works are in the collections of the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art; Belo Horizonte Museum of Art; Campinas Museum of Contemporary Art; Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and in private collections in Brazil and abroad.
