Library
The Escola Comunitária (ECC) serves all students, from kindergarten to high school, as well as parents, teachers and staff.
Kindergarten and Primary 1 students have a fixed time each week to go to the library, accompanied by their teacher. During the visit, they learn about the new titles that have been added to the collection and receive guidance on choosing the book they will take home to read during the week. Students also visit the library regularly to collect data for their Individual Project and to consult the collection for their Class Project.
From Primary 2 onwards, students go to the library, with no set timetable, to do research, schoolwork and borrow books to read at home. As well as borrowing books in their mother tongue, the library also has English-language books in its collection, which students in Primary 1 and 2 regularly borrow to read at home, under the guidance of their subject teacher.
At the moment, our library has a computerized collection of approximately 18,000 titles, contributing to the education of our students in reading and research procedures, as well as to the training of our educators. It is constantly renewed to meet the demands of class projects, individual projects and topics discussed in the classroom. In addition, the library offers users carefully selected novelties from the publishing market.
Families, students and school staff can consult the titles available in the Library on our Educational Portal. Access below:

In order to help work with values related to encouraging reading, sharing and the conscious use of natural resources, the Library offers a permanent space for exchanging children’s and young adult’s books: the LIBRARY EXCHANGE.
The invitation to the exchange is presented in a calendar that the Library organizes every six months and sends to the teachers of each course.

During the Literary ECC we started book clubs, bringing together groups of people – children, young people and adults – who are interested in reflecting, exchanging ideas, opinions and impressions about a book they have chosen to read. Book clubs can have various configurations of literary themes and genres, meet in person and/or online,
choose readings in Portuguese or other languages.
We already have an organized club – “Cida Bento” Reading Club – Do you want to study more and understand more about structural racism, to know your place in this structure and how to fight it? Have you ever wondered if there was a collective catalog built around works with ethnic-racial themes for this purpose and a group of enthusiasts with the same goal as yours to discuss them? In an urgent effort to integrate families into anti-racism, education and literature, this catalog has become a reality through this book club, created by ECC families.
The meetings will take place on the last Wednesday of every month, starting in April. At each meeting, lasting 1.5 hours (online), a book and a movie will be discussed based on the annual schedule.

Can you imagine having a fridge full of books? At the Escola Comunitária, that idea will become a reality with our ice cream parlor!
But what is a gelateca anyway? It’s the combination of a recycled fridge and a library, resulting in a space dedicated to donating and exchanging books, managed by the users themselves.
The ice-cream library will be strategically located in a circulation area of the school, as the idea is that people will come across it on their way and can check out the existing titles and pick them up to read at school or at home.
Operation of the Gelateca:
The books in the library are renewed through donations from the school community. To donate, simply leave the book in the library. It is important that the donated book is in good condition.
To pick up a book, simply choose the one you want and take it home. There are no checks or registers.
After reading the book, it’s important to return it to the library. That way, other people will also have the opportunity to get to know the title and enjoy it.
